Without thorough governance and gift acceptance policies and procedures, many otherwise sophisticated and successful nonprofits expose themselves to aggravation, public relations nightmares, and even lawsuits.
Ford Thompson offers extensive background in developing comprehensive gift acceptance policies and procedures manuals that encompass all areas of your fund raising program, including Planned Giving Policies, Governance Policies, Endowed Fund Policy, Bequest Society Policy, Naming Opportunities Policy, Charitable Gift Annuities Policy, Securities Delivery and Transfer Instructions, Investment Policy, and Spending Policy
Here is a partial list of why your organization should have clearly stated and continually updated written policies:
Define who has the authority to solicit and/or accept gifts on behalf of the nonprofit.
- Ensure control of the development process in a central authority.
- Help protect the nonprofit's exempt status.
- Ensure compliance with 990 requirements
- Assure equal treatment of donors.
- Define gift acceptance, naming restrictions, and protect the nonprofit from being "used," as an object of investment to shelter income and avoid taxes.
- Can establish development credibility and ethical standing.
- Assure donors of sound fiscal management and stewardship of their gifts.
- Enable a nonprofit to politically decline unacceptable gifts—perhaps protecting staff from well-meaning, but naive executives and board members.
- Prevent the overvaluing of gifts-in-kind and gifts of property.
- Can avoid even the appearance of conflict of interest.
- Can assure no personal gain inuring to staff or volunteer.
- Require that legal counsel review trusts, contracts, and other agreements.
- Can preclude the appearance of the nonprofit coercing or otherwise unethically influencing donors.
Written policies are a "must" for organizations, large and small. It is essential that staffs know what to expect and what not to expect when performing their on-the-job duties and tasks. The above attributes are included in Ford Thompson’s gift acceptance policies and procedures manuals.
Our Governance and Gift Acceptance manuals and our Policies and Procedures manuals are sold in six different formats:
Option I: Complete Package
We will request copies of your Articles of Incorporation, By-laws, existing policies, and recent board minutes for review before our on-site visit. Our staff will extensively review this information. In the initial on-site review, our representative will gather pertinent information from staff members, committee, board or other knowledgeable individuals. The initial review and interviews usually take one day at your location. Fifteen working days after the on-site visit Ford Thompson will send you the manual’s first draft for your review and comments. We will then evaluate your comments, suggested changes, and revisions and incorporate them into a final draft. The final draft will be sent to you within 15 working days from our receipt of your written corrections, additions, or deletions. The cost of this program is $3500 plus related travel cost from our office in Southern Indiana. I'd like to purchase Option I now.
